October 30 Quick After ThoughtCheck out the pj's in the pic with the pumpkin face. Look at those little eyes behind the pumpkin. This is a pic I stole from T's blog. However, check out the pj's closely. Note the different top and bottom. I think this is shades of two different colored shoes on the girl. She was so excited about getting new pj's from her Mama's trip to the States, that she can't decide which pair to wear. So...she takes a top from one pair and a bottom from another pair. You go girl... Peanut Butter ToastieI remember well, many morning sitting with Sojo at her little table, enjoying a bit of "Peanut Butter Toastie" with her. I think the E family went through more peanut butter while I was there than usual, because I love it too. It doesn't seem that long ago that Sojo could not even say peanut butter. During the summer, she would say, "be-o be-o" and we knew that meant she wanted peanut butter. Now, she is very clear when she says, "peanut butter toastie, please". And so, this morning while I enjoyed my very own peanut butter toastie and a banana, sitting alone at our kitchen counter, I smiled thinking of those mornings she and I shared at her little table.
Could have sworn I had a pic of Sojo and me on the back patio with her eating one of her "nana pops", which was the only way I saw her eat bananas while I was there. But, oh my goodness, how she loved them. There was always a stash waiting in the freezer for her that her Mama had made. October 29 All For The Love of ShoesI love shoes. Maybe it is because as a child I only had two pair of shoes at a time. One for school and church and the other was for gym. In those days, you had to wear a special pair of shoes on the gym floor and NO others. When I got my first job and was able to actually buy a pair of shoes because I LOVED them and not because I had outgrown them or worn them out, I was in heaven. I remember buying a pair of red, white and blue Stride Rite shoes with a matching purse. I don't even remember the dress I had to go with them. I think it was a navy and white dress. It was the shoes that I remember. Anyway, I am embarrassed to even think about how many pairs of shoes I have in my closet and most of them sit collecting dust. At my age and the state of my feet, it is all about comfort, not style. And so, I pass the shoe baton onto my precious grand-daughter Sojo. She loves shoes too. It could be that each pair of Crocs that I send her are in different colors. It could have been those pink sparkly shoes I bought her last year. Maybe she was just born with a love for shoes. Who knows, but it sure brings a smile to my face. It may not to her parents as she gets older. And so, the story about her choosing 2 different shoes in 2 different colors goes like this. While I was visiting, we were going to go out to dinner at Que Pasa. That's right...a Mexican restaurant, right smack dab in the middle of a Thai neighborhood.
And so began, Sojo's love of two different shoes.
October 25 Looking BackI read Tara's blog and hear and see how much Sojo changed while she was gone. I think about how much she has changed since I left. My heart swells at the memories of my trip and it skips a beat when I think of how much I miss not being with her. I have to remind myself to hold the memories tightly against my heart until we are together again. I am so blessed to have had that time. I am so thankful.
October 23 Catching Up With Thailand TripJust thought I would try to go back to a few pictures that should have been including in the few blogs I did from Thailand.
Note the same shirt in these 3 pictures. This was all the activities of one short morning. Now I know why I was tired at the end of the day.
That is enough catching up for now. Stay tuned to more Popo's Adventures With Sojo. Where Do I Begin???I have been on the go for over 3 weeks and it is hard to pinpoint at this moment where to begin. It has been one big adventure after another. So, I think I will work my way backwards and begin at the end of this adventure, which would be the marriage of my youngest child and my second son. That would be MMR who married his beloved CMC. Would anyone expect less than something original? I think not. Would anyone expect tradition? I think not. Though, there were some surprises on that count. On Thursday the the 16th, the caravans began their way south to the border and over into Mexico. Traveling down to Puerto Penasco, Mexico or what we southern Arizona folks affectionately call Rocky Point. If all systems are go and traffic flows smoothly, you keep the pedal at a steady pace, there is no road construction, you don't have to make too many potty stops and the border moves quickly, I am told you can make it in 4 hours. We never seem to be able to do that. Yet, it is still the closest beach to us and we love it. We have stayed for years at a lovely Villa in a gated community called Las Conchas at Madre Del Mar (the lovely Villa) and this is where Matt and Cathy chose to get married. We had a couple days to relax and get the plans into place. Matt and Cathy had it all arranged and we just had to be there. What fun. Lots of friends and family from Tucson and Phoenix area and beyond...California, New Hampshire and North Carolina and who could forget the sister from Bangkok, Thailand. Friends from long ago and new friends too. Music was played and libations were flowing as we all relaxed in the sun and surf. Sunday, the 19th...12 years to the day that Matt and Cathy met was the day that the event was to happen and here are a few pictures to document it all....
October 04 A Morning Alone With My DaughterA morning alone with my daughter is something I have not had the pleasure of in so many years that I really cannot remember. The year she lived in Tucson (was that the year 2000?), I use to stop in at her cute little house on my way from work to a writing class I took near the University. I think that was truly the last time I remember spending even an hour alone with her. This was several hours this morning, as we ventured to downtown Bangkok alone. Baba and Sojo had some quality time together at home. T and I went to a Fair Trade Thai Craft Show. What fun. I purchased all sorts of goodies. None of which were expensive, but good quality and beautiful. The icing on the cake was knowing you were helping people all over Thailand who make these beautiful crafts without being exploited. They had everything from beautiful silk scarves to things made from coconut shells, like salad tongs and buttons. They had weavings, fabric things, silver, ceramics, etc., etc., etc., After an hours or so there, we ventured across the street for lunch. We had thought of the hotel where the crafts were, but then thought maybe a fancier hotel might be our liking. And then, Tara remembered a little place she had seen on another trip downtown. What a little find. Just outside the Ambassador Hotel and across the street into a little area that was so Thailand looking. Or, what I imagined it to look like. Downtown Bangkok is very large with high rised buildings, fancy 5 star hotels, etc. This was the sweetest little cafe. We sat on pillows on the floor with antique fans keeping us cool. Orchids were everywhere. I had a frozen watermelon juice to drink which came with its very own orchid. T had a ginger drink. Back a step here...first, they brought us this little white thing about the half the size of a roll of nickels in a tiny little dish and poured cool lemon grass water over it...one of those little cloths that expands when it gets wet. This was for us to cool off our face before we ate and wash our hands. Before I could even think, "get the 99% germ free wipes out", there they had it. Oh, and did I mention the orchid that came with that? Tara ordered Tom Kha Gah (spelling is different everywhere, so this is close) which is a delightful soup with chicken, coconut milk and lots of veggies and is delicious. I had a delightful fried shrimp dish with a sweet tamarind sauce with cashews. The shrimp came with their little heads on, but I did not eat that part...thank you very much. Our rice came with a little palm leaf tent like lid on it which they lifted off for us. Oh, and did mention there were orchids on our plates? We could have left with orchids in our ears and atop our heads. The food was wonderful and sitting there with my daughter sharing in this delightful meal was better than any of it. Just doing something simple, like shopping and lunch. Something so many mothers do with their daughters on a regular basis and might even take for granted. I thank my son-in-law for giving us that opportunity and watching Sojo so we could have that time. I thank my husband who so graciously and unselfishly sent me on this mission alone. What a gift. Being with my grand-daughter and doing things with her ... the every day things like changing diapers and fixing meals and joining in with her imaginative play.
When I count my blessings today, I am thankful for the little things in life...the sun that greets me daily, the soft touch of a toddler's hand in mine, the opportunity to cross the seas to a foregin land to see my daughter and her daughter (& my son-in-law), for lunch in a little cafe and time to shop, a husband who loves me unconditionally and always encourages me and sends me off to do and be what I can do and be and for sons who always bless me with a smile and a hug. Thank you God for a full life of blessings. October 02 Due To Technical Difficulties....I still cannot seem to download my pictures. I was able to download onto T's camera and even tried to email them to myself but couldn't open them. Wireless connection of some sort and I only have one bar. If you watch cell phone commercials, you know that is not enough for much.
I have so much I want to write about and the pictures are such a big part of it. It is so frustrating for me.
Last night we ventured out beyond the neighborhood and school area into a Thai neighborhood. It was quite interesting and I would love to take more time to see more of it. We went to a Mexican Resturant called Que Pasa. Now, being a Tucson gal, living practically on the border of Mexico, seeing this in Thailand tickled me. Inside I saw typical Mexican Restaurant decor...kitschy Mexican stuff on the walls. Tropical birds in a cage. The menu was varied from burittos and tacos and tostados and quesadillas to burgers and fries to pizza and pasta, plus Thai food to boot. I wanted to try the Thai...you know, when in Rome... but, they didn;t serve it on Wednesday nights. So, I ordered a delicious shrimp, avocado and sour cream quesadilla. Our little Chinese grand daughter, living in Thailand had Mexican rice and beans and ate a whole lot of spicy salsa and chips. She has one iron clad tummy. Her Mama and Baba had burgers and fries. They love ethnic food of all kinds, but I guess sometimes a good ole reminder of the USA is in order with a burger and fries. Sojo especially liked the playground outside. A great idea that more US restaurants should think of.
The hit of the night was Sojo's darling outfit. She wore a cute little denim ruffled skirt with a little white bohemian shirt. As cute as that was...what made it the cutest was her shoes. Her Mama had just unpacked a box with some shoes that had not quite fit her before leaving China. Now, they did. She looked at them and said, "fancy". Yes siree...these were fancy shoes. Pink sparkly little slipper shoes and another pair that were silver with bows. She was so taken with them, that she insisted on wearing one of each. Check out the Global Nomads blog for a pic of that. And it is from my camera....I just can't download it. Grrrr.....
She simply loved the shoes, the rice and beans and the playground. We all loved the food too, but even more, we loved watching her. Thank goodness technical difficulties do not keep me from seeing all of this in person. I will just have to catch up on pictures later.
