    Monsoon Madness

Finally, a bit of respite from our desert heat.  The 2008 summer monsoon season officially started last week, but we did not see any real sight of it until night before last when the sky lit up with bolts of lightening and the rumbling of thunder echoed across the desert floor.  Yesterday, the clouds rolled in early and by early afternoon the rains came.  Some across the city said they had up to 2 inches, but the official number was only .10 inches.  There were high winds and flooding in the streets.  There is always one who thinks they can enter a wash and make it to the other side while water is raging across it, without getting caught in it.  Yesterday was no exception.  Fortunately, the woman was rescued without any harm to her.  Although, her car may not have faired as well.  We did not get a lot of rain out here where we snuggle up against the Catalina and Rincon Mountains.  The other end of the Catalina Mountains was the area hit most.  We just got to revel in the sweet smell of rain and watch it gently fall onto the desert.  IMG_0543 IMG_0544

And we enjoyed the dip in temperatures from those 100++++ to the 70's.  That was pure pleasure in a drop of rain.  The temps will go back up today and jump over 100 again, but hopefully, the afternoon will bring another respite monsoon rain and we will enjoy what it brings.  The animals will come out of hiding in search of small puddles to drink from and dance in the rain.

Note how empty the pool and labyrinth are of the dancing and giggles of one little girl who enjoyed them so much just a few days ago.  It wasn't the rain that made them look so empty to me...it was the absence of that little girl.  Thankfully, we will see her again tomorrow afternoon.  Life is good...oh, so good.  Two things that make me smile ... Desert rain in a parched desert

and the smile of a toddler girl...IMG_0233

Day Eight ... Or... All Good Things Must Come to An End

We had to say "goodbye" this morning, as the kids left for Washington.  It wasn't fun, but it wasn't as bad as other times.  This time...we know we will see them again in 4 short days.  We will have another 2 weeks with them before we have to say that "final goodbye" before we come back to Tucson and they pack for Thailand.  That's when the tears flow and the heart aches.

Enough said about goodbyes...We had a great day yesterday.  The "boys" went out to play golf in the 108 degree heat.  Oh my goodness...why would anyone do that to their body?  Golf is an interesting game...it brings out the craziness in men.  Maybe some women too...but, not this one.

So, Tara, Sojo and Po Po were on their own.  Sojo had a great night sleeping (all the way through...woo....hoo) so she had lots of energy to have a full day of fun.

We started out the day early and still in our jammies, we walked the labyrinth with Mama.  IMG_0425 IMG_0435

Next we were on our way to JW Tumbles where we were able to tumble on mats, climb ramps and stairs, swing from poles, slide on slides, run and jump and play with balls.  It was a lot of fun.   IMG_0437 IMG_0440 IMG_0483 Tara met a gal she knew in High School who worked there.  What a small world.

IMG_0448 We had the best time and still had enough energy to stop at Joann's Fabric Store, so Mama could find some things to create great things with her new sewing machine when she gets to Seattle and Thailand.  Po Po and Sojo explored the store while Mama browsed and shopped.  No pics of that.

After a short nap in the car, we went home and just plain old played with toys and read books and listened to music.

And later...the best part...swimming...She had a ball.  She decided that it was time to do things "self" and wanted no ones hands and she would jump to her Mama.  Oh my...underwater and seeing under water and taking in a little water, but she seemed to know what to do.  She loved watching her Mama go "over" in the water and stick her feet out of the water.  IMG_0497 Riding the "noodle"  IMG_0506 Getting ready to jump

    IMG_0505 Laughing with Mama

IMG_0518 Baba made it home in time to see some of the fun.

    IMG_0521 More...more...more

And then the day ended and as Sojo slept (all night again) Mama and Baba packed up everything and I quietly snuck out to take one last picture of life with Sojo.  Earlier in the day...between one fun thing and before another...we did a little project of the garden stone and Sojo's hand prints.  We had tried that at Christmas for an ornament and her squiggly little fingers just dug into the material rather than lay softly on it.  Same thing this time.  It took two of us to get her fingers planted firmly into it.  I thought this was a perfect way to end this blog today....Sojo in JoJo's car and then ready to get in the car to go and then...memories to cherish until the next time...IMG_0540 IMG_0541

IMG_0539 Thank you God for the precious gifts you give us to create memories with.

    I Can't Stop Smiling

This girl just makes me smile.  Whether it is seeing her smiling face and hearing her silly chatter when she wakes up or whether it is the dancing she does to music or the way she plays with her toys with such intent and simple joy.  She just makes me smile.

    IMG_0409 Now you know why.

In spite of the temperatures being way over 100 degrees...like maybe 108, we went to the zoo yesterday morning.  We didn't stay long, but long enough to get some candid shots of Sojo enjoying herself at the zoo. IMG_0366 She loves to go 1, 2, 3, wheeeeeeeeee

IMG_0394 She got her face painted with a pretty flower for the first time.IMG_0360 Riding an elephant with a little help from JoJo Sean and Baba.

We had a family dinner for Sean's birthday and attempted to get the ever obligatory family picture.  I overheard some grumbling that this is what Mom makes them do every year.  Wait till they are the ones who have to gather their chicks in from all over the globe for a picture sitting.  It was the first time we had taken a "time exposure" with the new camera, so RGR was having a bit of a time figuring it out.  There were a few pics without him in them, until he figured it out.  Yeah...for Gong Gong...he did it.  IMG_0356 This one was before we got all settled in and were still trying to get Sojo to sit still.  Dale looks like he is the only one understanding the whole family picture taking thing.  You go...Dale.  IMG_0357 Ahhh...we got it, including Cathy's mom.  We are just one big happy family.  Whew!

IMG_0352 Sojo with her Jojo and her Mojo.

IMG_0417 A morning dance with Teddy Bear, Gong Gong and Elmo.  Does life get any better?

IMG_0420 Reading a story with Mama..."Goodnight Gorilla", which has become her new favorite book.  We bought a bunch of books long before Sojo came on the scene at a silent auction and they have been sitting patiently on the floor in a box for a little girl (or boy someday) to enjoy. This special one may have to find its way into someone's little pink rolly bag.

We took Sojo to church this morning.  No pictures of that.  She enjoyed cruising around the place before many people starting coming in.  She liked listening to the choir practice and clapped for them and said "more" after they had finished.  Soon after Mass started, she got a bit antsy.  Luckily, her Gong Gong's office is also used as the Sunday morning nursery.  We took turns with her in there and she enjoyed riding the little "horsy" and sliding down the little slide all by herself.  She came back out at the end and enjoyed the music again.  She also enjoyed cruising around as people left and we enjoyed showing her off to all of our friends.  We got lots of smiles from people and we enjoyed the moments sharing the joy that she brings us.  Talk about something to go to church and thank God for.  She is one special blessing in our life.

I give thanks to my God at every remembrance of you, praying always with you in my every prayer.  Philippians 1:3-4

Day Four and Five and Jo Jo Sean is 37

It is so much fun watching this sweet baby (even if she doesn't sleep so much) and it reminds me of raising 3 sweet babies of my own.  One of those sweet babies turned 37 today.  Whoa! Where did those years go?  Sean was born at 7:39 PM EST, so he isn't quite 37 yet here on MST, but almost.  He was also born on Father's Day, so some years he and Ron have to share the spotlight.  This year, it is all his.  He is in the middle of his last class of his Masters Degree in Special Education, so it is a special and double celebration today.  Plus, his sister, brother-in-law and niece are here to celebrate.  We are eating in so that Sojo can have a more enjoyable time.  Actually, I think we are doing it so we can all have a more relaxed time.  Hee! Hee!  Toddlers don't seem to get as much enjoyment out of the dining out experiences as adults do.  Sean certainly does...his favorite is seafood and especially crab legs.  So, we made a trip to Costco for seafood and we figure that Sojo is probably saving us a few bucks by us having the celebration at home too.  Matt, Cathy and Cathy's mom will be out later too.  Sean is already here and watching Curious George with Sojo.

    IMG_0008 Happy Birthday Sean!

We continue to enjoy Sojo and all her little antics.  She continues to struggle as she adjusts to the time change.  16 hours difference is huge.  I think about how I drag myself around for days after a trip like that and I know.  She doesn't.  Look at this map and imagine the miles that little girl has traveled in her life and will continue to do as she grows in her Global Nomad family.

    Map image

She is falling asleep in her Baba's arms right now while watching Curious George.

IMG_0305 Yesterday, we had fun exploring Bookman's bookstore.  She loved the ladders that she found around the store and especially loved a little monkey she found and someone purchased it for her.  I think it was her "one toy only" Baba.  She loves that monkey (not her Baba, silly...the stuffed monkey).  We also went to Chucky Cheese.  Now that is complete overload for an adult, let alone a small child.  IMG_0303 She did like the characters though.

IMG_0310 This was just a wee little tantrum on the kitchen floor.  Which ended the minute her Gong Gong came in the door from being gone most of the day.

IMG_0309 Mama and Sojo in the pool.  She wasn't thrilled with it yesterday.

Sojo had to have a little blood test today and was such a good girl.  She did a good job.  No pictures of that.IMG_0336But we do have a picture of the mighty tower builder.

Day Two And Three...Or, The Games Begin

We are certainly are having fun, but no one is getting any sleep.  Miss Sojo's sleep schedule is willy nilly and all over the map.  We really thought that yesterday was the break through because she had slept much better Wednesday night...even though she was up.  However, she slept later...until about 9:30 and then took her nap around 11:30, getting up around 1:30.  She was a few hours off there, but closer than she had been.  We had a great afternoon and she went to sleep at 7 pm.  We were sure she was back on schedule...NOT!!  Up at 10 pm and not back to sleep til 4:15 this morning.  WOW!  Mama and Baba are still sleeping. What patience they have with that little one.  Amazing.  Understanding how a 20 month old's little mind works...they eat when they are hungry and they sleep when they are tired.  Makes sense to me.

In spite of the lack of sleep, we are still enjoying the joys of this toddler.  Mama and Baba run off to do errands and PoPo and Gong Gong get to revel in the joys of grand parenting all by themselves.

IMG_0206 Cooking up breakfast and eating a "homborger"  IMG_0209 I bought these little food and cooking things several years ago when my nieces were little.  I knew that someday I would have a grand child to share them with again.  They waited patiently (like me) on a shelf for Sojo.

IMG_0211 Po Po and Sojo fall asleep on the floor after a little back massage for Sojo.

IMG_0213 Watching Curious George (her favorite) with Gong Gong and the Bears.

IMG_0230 This is becoming a habit.  Po Po gives her another massage and she falls asleep again.  Maybe this is the problem????

IMG_0241 Baby/Toddler Story Time at the Library while Mama and Baba run errands.  I don't know who have more fun...Sojo or Po Po and Gong Gong.  Sojo loves bubbles, so this was her favorite part.  She also loved being in the middle of the room and dancing to all the songs played and clapping at the end of each one.  She was the oldest one there, so she was quite the charmer as she paraded in and out and around and about.  She was very careful of the little babies as she did this.  She is a very "aware" little girl.

IMG_0254 And then, we had ice cream.  A very special treat that she does not get often, but you know the saying (on the bib) "what happens at Grandma's, stays at Grandma's".

IMG_0265 Mama and Baba brought her back a little wading pool, so she could have more freedom than in the big pool and we could sit in the shade of the patio and watch her delight.

IMG_0290 I didn't take this picture.  I am thinking someone took this in the middle of the night....

It was a VERY GOOD DAY...Can't wait for her to get up today and start all over again.  But, for now Sojo...sleep.

    Test

This is a test.  I am testing the Windows Live Writer to see how it works, so hopefully my speedy fingers will get a quick spell check before I post/publish my blog.  I see far too many errors that are either simply nimble fast fingers going too fast or simply my old brain not making all the connections it should be.

Day One...Or, How Long Can A Person Go Without Sleep

The flight to Tucson was right on time and we waited and watched the monitor until we saw familiar feet and then familiar faces comint down the concource at TIA.  Whooo...hooo:) They are here.  At first, Sojo didn't seem to be too sure about this maybe familiar faces that she was used to seeing on a computer screen...then it settled in and she was smiling and jumping in the snuggle sling with her Mama.  Quickly getting out and down on the floor, she immediately began to "perform" for Popo and Gong Gong...doing all of her tricks...like jumping and jumping and more jumping and running and climbing and whew! we knew right away that the next 7 days would be fast paced and fun, fun, fun.

IMG_0150IMG_0153 No one in the "E" family got any sleep on the very long trip from Shanghai.  Shanghai to Narita, Japan to Los Angeles to Tucson...nearly 24 hours later.  Sojo conked out in the car on the way home and we thought maybe it was just a nap.  We all had dinner...including Sean, Matt and Cathy and still no sign of Sojo, so we thought maybe she was down for the night...we were all in bed early...thinking we would see her this morning.  NOT...she was up right after we went to bed and to sleep.  Mama and Baba entertained her for sometime and then I heard the gang...I got up and did a "tour of duty" from about 11 pm until about 12:45 so Mama could get a few winks in.  Then ...Mama sang a little "goodnight" song and Sojo did her night time ritual of "love" for Mama, Baba, Gong Gong, PoPo, Nai Nai and some of her animal friends.  Oh my...too cute.  I thought that was it...nope...round about 4:20 am...did I say...am?  Mama figured that it was time to rouse the grandparents...up we got and we did everything from play in the livingroom with all her toys, to dancing, jumping, spinning around, eating and more eating and swimming and taking a bath and oh, I forgot we fed the birds, looked for bunnies, walked the labyrinth, made muffings, dressed up in a tutu and boa... and finally, she went down for a nap around 9:45 am...that was am...Still sound asleep at 10:45 am.  Mama and Bab are running errands and we are on "watch" for a while.  Are we having fun yet?  What do you think?  IMG_0166Muffins always need a little green Christmas Tree Sprinkles.IMG_0168Raisen Bran Muffins.  Note the finished product...green sprinkles and a little extra flour.

    Pictures Missing

I am simply not having good luck this week with blogging.  The blog is missing all of the pictures that I inserted.  I thought I would do it in Word and then copy and paste...so, I would not lose it again.  Seemed to work...everything was there...until I said "publish" and then it dropped the pictures.  So...here they are a little flash back of how time flies when you are having fun and falling in love with your first grand child...

Less Than 20 Hours -- But Whose Counting

I attempted to write a nice blog yesterday about how this little one has touched our lives and how she has changed in one short year from a tiny little “lump” on a blanket, as her mother says, into a frisky, spirited and fun loving toddler that we cannot wait to see.  Anyway, I lost it in cyberspace somewhere.  Couldn’t find it…lost forever.  I am sure it was an amazing example of literary genius.  Well, maybe not…I am sure it was just grandma dribble about a little girl who has captured my heart and fills up spaces in my being that I never even knew existed.

And so…there she was a year ago…barely able to hold her little head up….giving us a flower in our last hours with her….helping us say goodbye for a while and breaking our little hearts into tiny pieces.  But…by the grace of God and the gift of a plane ticket, we flew to Shanghai for her birthday and were blessed with seeing her again…She loves nature and is one very cool kidJ  And then it was Christmas and the best gift of all…sharing it with our grand daughter, her parents and her Nai Nai from Washington. What a funny, loving family they are.

And now…we wait to see this sweetie again.  Are we lucky or what?  We feel so blessed.  We know there are families that don’t get to see one another nearly as often as we do and we try…honest we do…not to complain, because we know we are blessed…we know we are fortunate to have kids who value family and know how important it is to have Sojo bond and grow with grand parents.  We know how hard it is financially and physically to travel with a toddler and we are ever so thankful for kids who make the sacrifice and bring that sweet baby home to us as often as humanly possible.  Thank you…thank you…thank you.  Did I mention that they are in the air as I write and we will have that sweetness in our arms and be hugging and kissing her in less than 20 hours.  Less than 20 hours…that is less than a day.  Oh my goodness….beds are made and ready for 3 tired bodies…floors still need a little cleaning…but, toys are out and ready to play with…the high chair is in the kitchen…wooo….hooo….we are ready and waiting and counting down the minutes….till this precious little girl arrives (with her parents…we are excited to see them too….)   And, can you believe how she has changed in just a year…into this toddler beauty…Safe and easy travel to all…see you soon…very soon.

Six Months Is Too Long and Asia Is Too Far Away

Really missing that little one today and wishing I was hearing the pitter patter of her little feet in the hall right now.  I am wishing that there was not a large body of water between us.  I am wishing that she lived right next door.  I am wishing that the next 10 days fly by, so I can once more hold her in my arms, see her smile, hear her little chatter in person, touch her soft little face and smell the sweetness of her next to me again.

I have learned to accept the distance and knowledge that my relationship with my grand daughter is from a distance and through a computer...but today...for some reason...I am missing her more.  Like I miss her mother too.  Today, I allow myself to wallow just a bit in the emptiness I sometimes feel in knowing I cannot pick up the phone and say, "bring Sojo over today and I will watch her while you go shopping" or "hey, let's meet at the zoo this morning and show Sojo the elephants" or "how about a morning swim and lunch with Sojo"?  I allow myself that this morning...but, then I need to leave it behind so I can plan for her visit and enjoy those moments.  I don't want to miss the joy in all those moments because I am wallowing in this moment.  So, Helen...wallow and get on with it.

Enough...of that...it is time to prepare for that little one.  We need to freshen up the guest room for her Mama and Baba and freshen up the "sacred space" for the port-a-crib for Sojo.  We need to get out to the shed and get the high-chair, port-a-crib and toys for Sojo.We also need to "Sojo Proof" the house a bit.  In December, she was still a bit timid about running around.  I don't think she will be quite so timid this time.  I can see her running all around, checking out each new thing she sees...from her Gong Gong's hearing aids on his bedstand to under the sinks to whatever her little hands can reach.  Our biggest area of concern is the pool.  The door will be locked and the key hanging high up and NO ONE GOES OUT WITHOUT HAVING SOMEONE LOCK IT BEHIND THEM!!!!!!  What fun we will have...swimming in the pool...going to the park to swing and slide ..Wheeeeeegoing to the zoo...going to the Children's Museum...reading books....playing....having tea parties...blowing bubbles...watching Horton Hears A Who with her...taking an evening walk...going to lunch at Olive Garden (her Mama's favorite)....seeing her Mojo Matt and Cathy and Jojo Sean...laughing...enjoying every moment we have.  It will all begin in 10 days and we cannot wait.  We are counting each of those days until we stand at the bottom of the escaltor at Tucson Internation Airport...catch a glimpse of them from the monitor and I begin to giggle and dance with glee...see them on the escaltor and giggle and dance some more until they get to the bottom and I have that sweetness in my arms once more.  Counting the days...counting my blessings....

    Goodness Gracious...Great Balls of Fire

Yes, indeed...goodness gracious...great balls of fire...on this date 44 years ago, I graduated from High School.  How can that be?

Recently, while visiting my home town for Ron's mother's 90th birthday, I had the opportunity to have a late breakfast and coffee with two of my high school buddies.  A third, Peggy was not able to come because her husband is in the middle of treatment for a brain tumor.  He is in my prayers.

Like my previous blog stated, I am a small town/country gal.  We graduated in one of the two largest graduating classes to ever graduate from VJHS.  I think we had 52 or 54 kids.  Ron's class of 1961 was the other largest class.  Funny thing is about small towns...you usually wind up marrying someone you went to school with.  Sue married Bob who was also in our class...Peggy married Mike who was in our class...Mart married Ken who was a year behind us and I married Ron who was three years ahead of us.  Small world...Mart got married first, then me, then Peggy I think and then Sue.  We all have 3 children...Mart 2 boys and a girl, me 2 boys and a girl, Sue 3 boys and Peggy 3 boys.  Mart has 2 grandchildren, Sue 2 grandchildren, me, one and I think Peggy has 2 or 3 (need to get caught up with her).  We all had such fun growing up in the country and doing crazy things in High School.  Compared to today...our antics were simply fun...not at all crazy.  Birthday parties, dances, basketball games, proms, laying in the sun and getting sunburned...going to the lake in the summer....ah, those were the days my friend...I thought they'd never end....

173-7320_IMGIt is nice to know that through all the years and distance because I am the one who moved away...we have maintained this friendship. Just another one of my blessings.  Here's to VJHS and to friends I cherish.

Things I Love About A Large City

Now I am a small town...actually country gal.  I was born in a small north western Pennsylvania town where the French Creek meets the Allegheny River.  I even lived in Pittsburgh for 1 year as a small child and another year and a half when I was first married.  In between those Pittsburgh years, I lived for 10 years on 40 acres (nearly all woods) in the country.  There was one house within eye sight.  So, I still consider myself a country girl.

While in Pittsburgh as a small child, I was fearful of the busy streets on the busy boulevard I lived on.  As a newly married young woman, I was still fearful of the busy streets.  Yet, by the time we were ready to leave, I had begun to enjoy what the city had to offer.  Like those wonderful old family owned department stores that now carry the same name across the country because they have been bought out by the "big guys".  I will carry the memory of my first escalator ride in Kaufmann's across the street from where I worked downtown, forever.  I had never seen so many wonderful things in all my life.  At Christmas they brought artisans from all over the world to come and show their talents...be that music, wood, glass...whatever.  Buying much was not in our budget but I learned the joys of "window shopping" at its finest.  Then there were the street cars...the clang clang of the bells and the zip zip and crackle of the "thing" that went from the car to the electrical line above us.  Oh, and one of my favorites is the street car that went through the woods.  Oh, those were the days.  And the cable car that went up Mt. Washington with a view of the "point" of the Three Rivers (where the Allegheny and Monongahela meet the Ohio).  At night it was spectactular.

After Pittsburgh, we moved to NY...about 2 hours north of the big city of New York City.  Is there any other like it?  No.  We didn't get down as often as we should have during our 14 years there, but when we did, it was always fun.  From the Empire State Building to the Statue of Liberty to Wall Street and Times Square to the Theatre District and not to be forgotten Central Park.  Hot pretzels being served on every corner and restaurants that range from mom and pop diners to the best of the best in all the world.  People...oh, my...one could spend an entire year doing nothing but people watching.  Where else in the world could one find the "naked cowboy" standing in the middle of Times Square wearing nothing but his "tighty whities", cowboy boots, cowboy hat, red cape and his guitar...singing his heart out for whatever you might drop into his box sitting nearby.  Even the likes of 911 could not change the hearts of these people.

My recent trip to San Francisco reminded me of these moments in other big cities.  Prompting me to think of what it is I love about big cities:

    • Ethnicity...you see faces of all colors.  You feel a sense of oneness and likeness through the differences around you.  Where else would you find the oldest Cathedral in California in the middle of China Town.  171-7163_IMG171-7167_IMG
    • Corner Markets and little cafes built into the neighborhoods  171-7186_IMG  171-7184_IMG
    • Street Musicians ... I love the way they bring their talent to the streets.  Questions of why...homeless or just determined to use that talent to entertain.  They are always grateful for whatever you give.  We once read this book that gave you ideas on how to live a good life.  One was to always give to street musicians.  171-7145_IMGFrom those from other continents to 171-7151_IMG171-7153_IMGthose with Southern charm and humor to clowns171-7155_IMGto wannabee James Taylors171-7157_IMG.  I love it all.
    • Traffic and Transportation.  I wouldn't care to drive in any of the big cities I have lived in or near.  I don't even like having to drive through Phoenix on I-10.  Forget going from I-10 to the 101 Loop or any place else.  But, I do love watching it from a distance...especially in the downtown areas.  In San Francisco, the highlight ofcourse is seeing the cablecars....171-7133_IMG  171-7131_IMG  or how cars park on those steep streets  Taylor Street to Pine Street

Oh, I love my desert dwelling here in our little cowtown, sometimes disguised as a growing metropolis, but I do enjoy an occasional visit to the big city where I can drink in the differences and breathe in the history.
